The History Guys (l to r) Onuf, Balough, and Ayers

Rachel Quimby, Associate Producer of the new history-focused radio show BackStory, has submitted this description of the program. Readers of the Encyclopedia Virginia blog should check it out . . .

VFH radio is proud to announce the launch of BackStory with the American History Guys—the nation’s ONLY call-in history show! Each week, renowned (but never stuffy) historians Peter Onuf, Ed Ayers, and Brian Balogh rip a topic from the headlines and find its connections (and sometimes its disconnections) to the past.

Each hour-long episode features guest experts and calls from . . . YOU! Topics so far have included political newcomers, controversial wars, and our latest, Traffic: How We Get from There to Here.

Be sure to visit the website, where you can listen to shows, leave comments, and subscribe to our free podcast. If we sign up a few more subscribers, we’ll be featured on the iTunes history homepage.

Still not sure what to expect?

Tony, BackStory’s Senior Producer, likes to think of the show as a ride down a dirt road in the flatbed of an old Chevy pickup truck . . . driven by three really smart historians.

Andrew, BackStory’s Executive Producer, sees it more as a great conversation with three pals (one of whom is a university president) around the kitchen table.

As for me—I don’t much care for similes (but I admit to having thought of the show as a moist towelette for the mind).

BackStory has already received some press. Take a look at what the Daily Progress and UVA Today had to say.

My grandmother, on the other hand, said this: “The BackStory brings me such naches—I laughed ’til I plotzed. May it be around for a thousand years. Kenehora. Though it’s a shanda my Rachel’s in radio. She’s got such a shayna punim.
