The real action was over the weekend, what with Lee surrendering on Saturday (1865) and James I issuing the First Charter of Virginia on Sunday (1606). Meanwhile, on this day in 1942, John Stewart Bryan resigned as president of the College of William and Mary. The longtime owner and publisher of the Richmond News Leader had let things go a bit. What became VCU and ODU were then both affiliate campuses of the W&M, and the school lost its accreditation because of Bryan’s lack of oversight.
